Trojans and horses

A friend of mine entrusted me with his computer, complaining it was working very slow despite being bought not so long ago. And I'm always looking to help out a friend in need :) So I took the challenge. And boy was I up for a quest!
By the time the computer came into my hands it was booting slowly, but by kiling some processes with the always trusty companion Task Manager, you could easily made it work 'normaly'. I managed to get rid of a lot of junk with the Ad-Aware SE Personal but after every reboot some of the pests reapeared as Ad-Aware was not able to get rid of them completly. What is a guy to do?
I turned off System restore for all disks and rebooted into Safe mode. Here I ran various antivirus, anti-trojan and anti-everything softwares with little or no effect. I tried AVG, Kaspersky, Spybot came up with a few stuff to destroy, Hijackthis found a few irregularities, but besides from that the trojans persisted. To my surprise the computer was working quite well at this point, well until you went online. Then all hell broke loose. I decided to try the whole process in Safe mode again. But this time I used avast! Home Edition. It immediately identified that the computer was infected and made arrangements to scan it at next boot. And that was it, I rebooted and watched as avast! deleted trojan after trojan. I think a few viruses were there too. For good measure I ran Ad-Aware again and a program called CCleaner, and at next reboot the computer was apparently trojan and virus free!
Now wasn't that a lovely good night story boys and girls. Now tuck in and sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite :)
